shes been literally abused by her mother into thinking she needs to be in love w a prince and her only use in life is to be married to one and cater to him hence her “crush” on chad during which she only expresses attraction to him bc hes a stereotypically attractive boy and hes in line for a throne and her extremely performative comment abt princes on the isle.

her “crush” on doug only forms after chad and ben are both ruled out as a possible crushes for her bc chad is a dick and ben is with mal, leaving doug (who srsly she LAUGHED at when he asked her out earlier) as the only boy she cld be romantically interested in since jay and carlos are probably off limits to her bc shes known them so long and cant pretend to think of them that way. she doesnt start acting like she likes him until after she cant like chad or ben anymore and even then, she ditches him immediately for mal.

now mal, mal she actually seems to have a crush on. throughout the movie, evie constantly seeks mal’s approval (immediately going quiet when mal expresses annoyance w the comment abt princes, pretending to not like their room jst bc mal doesn’t, telling mal she found the wand, etc.), fusses over her (”you look flushed out” comments), makes excuses to touch her (all of her attempts to put makeup on mal god), and rly jst goes along w what mal says and wants w/o even hesitating (the best example imo is when evie lets mal push her out of the way of maleficent’s dragon form even though evie was honestly fine and handling shit w her mirror). also it’s highkey important that evie ONLY refers to mal as her sister once mal is with ben and evie has decided she likes doug now, evie doing this cld very much imply she might be at least subconsciously aware of her feelings for mal and she’s trying to make them platonic.
