bayonettas-left-eye:

Bayonetta 2 portays Rosa as a protective mother, even without the extra dialogue to confirm it.

I’ve had this post in my drafts for a while. I think it’s time I post it.

Bayo 2’s “Vigrid, City of Deja Vu,” is one of my favorite chapters to play, precisely because you get to play as Bayonetta alongside Rosa. So I was immensely disappointed by the fact that Rosa says so few lines to her daughter.

After pouring hundreds of hours into the game, I’ve kind of changed my mind. I’m still disappointed in her lack of dialogue, but I believe her personality and her love for her daughter shows through her actions. This is especially highlighted by cutscenes.

Rosa is almost always IN FRONT of Bayonetta. I think this was purposefully done as a way of communicating that she is putting herself in the way of danger as a form of protecting Bayo.

In this situation, with an amazingly broad age difference (Bayonetta being roughly 500- or 600- something years old [607 if you consider 2 happening in the most current year], and Rosa being only 51) Bayonetta very much becomes the child or the baby and Rosa’s parenting instincts shine through.

Additionally, during the 2 out of 3 times you get seperated from her, she manages to find her way back to Bayonetta. The first time is when Sapienta goes to attack Bayonetta in the Umbran Armor; Rosa who had previously parted with Bayonetta to fight elsewhere, abandons her armor to defend Bayo with Hekatonker.

The second time is at the beginning of Chapter 15. At the end of 14 Bayonetta get seperated from Rosa, only for Rosa to find her daughter at the start of 15, much to Bayonetta’s pleasure.

It becomes clear that Rosa is keen on ensuring Bayonetta is kept safe, even at her own expense. What’s more, I think it’s an intelligent interpretation of Rosa as a level-headed mom; she doesn’t go searching for 20 year old Cereza because 608 year old Bayonetta is here, which obviously implies her daughter survives the Witch Hunts. Instead, she spends her time ensuring the safety of future Bayonetta.

Finally, let’s explore Rosa’s targetting system. Companions attack enemies based on both your auto- and manual- lock on. As an experiement, I locked on and did nothing else to see how the characters reacted. I noticed Rosa was much quicker to come to your defense, than say Loki, who often took his time (also attributed to the fact that Loki is also a slower character), and often attacked other enemies.

Rosa, on the other hand, almost exclusively continues to target your locked-on enemy. She quickly changes targets when you switch your lock-on and is relentless in pursuing the enemy you are currently locked-on to.

I interpreted this as a purposeful mechanic incorporated to represent how protecive she is of Bayonetta. Rosa is constantly by your side, constantly watching over you. Even when you think she’s not paying attention to Bayonetta, she is.

So while I am deeply disappointed in her lack of dialogue, I do believe they did decent job at silently portraying her as a protective mother.

I also think Bayonetta’s subtle, sheer joy at having her mummy around is adorable. I mean, look at how happy that face is.

Finally, I spend hours doing these posts. I spend time getting these screenshots and these videos, and a lot of time writing things out. If you’re going to copy me nearly word for word, and pretend it was your observation, or take my videos, which are small, but often a part of hours of footage, at least credit me, especially when it is easy for me prove that you’ve copied me….This post is relatively straightforward and based on popular parts of the game, but I’ve made posts with lesser known facts and have had those posts plagiarized across fandoms.

This happens nearly every time I join a fandom, and it’s not just teenagers who do it. So seriously. It might not be official or formal work, but I put a ton of time into it. I wouldn’t have an issue with it if it was just a case of coincidental obeservation; but throughout my time on tumblr I’ve just actually encountered people taking my posts on and off tumblr and regurgitating them verbatim while claiming it was completely their writing and it is frustrating.
